Finally I've realised the error of my ways.
I've been using FreeNews with freenet for about 5 months
and have been increasingly sick of its slow download rate.
My USR V34 Sportster (on RiscPC) has been reporting 800cps
at best recently, with a long delay around 'Requesting new
article list' stage.
I found a slower V32bis modem on a clean !Freenews at school
was pulling in news at 1500cps !!! Took it home - back down
to 500cps !!!
Brain on mode.
Look !FreeNews history file over 600k, OK clear it out manually.
Lo and behold, news transfer with Sportster of over 2400cps
(still not brilliant but a heck of a lot better).
I'd turned off auto expire in Freenews' housekeeping as I couldn't
see a reason for it.
The moral of this story, don't turn off all automatic functions.
My FreeNews is now set to auto expire on closedown. I guess it
spends a lot of time with a large history file cross referring
news items, which gives the impression of slow transfers, when
the actual transfer rate is OK, time is just wasted between items.
This is the end of our public service broadcast ......... ping.
